Get to know Paul Fleming for Mayor of Belleville
Energetic New Leadership for Belleville
I first met Belleville in 2014, driving up from Toronto to help during the Moira River flooding. Before that, all I knew were the $1 milkshakes at Reid's Dairy. Janeen and I bought our home here in 2018 - an old Victorian, and now it's our forever home. Somewhere in between, I started asking why this place is just a stop on the way somewhere, instead of the destination it deserves to be.
I've spent 30+ years helping non-profits, startups, and larger businesses run smarter: manage budgets responsibly, build real teams, get things done. I know how to talk business and go get good jobs for this city, and how non-profit leaders make communities better, working with the city and local businesses to get there.
"Better" isn't something one person decides. It's something we will build together, by listening and by making sure everyone knows what's happening. I will be out and about in Belleville, with you.
In 2021 Maclean’s magazine declared Belleville the “4th best place to live in Canada”. That same year US News declared it to be the 7th best place to retire. We were riding high; afterall what’s not to love about Belleville?
In 2024 the Mayor made a rash, ill-advised declaration of a State of Emergency without a plan to go forward. People called their Belleville friends and family from all over the world, worried about their safety. Belleville was no worse off than a dozen other Ontario cities, but we scared away potential residents and businesses from coming here. In the past month, the people of Belleville shared with me that they feel our best days are behind us – that we’re not as safe, clean, fun, or friendly as we once were and that we don’t listen anymore.
I have a vision for a city that builds on the strengths of everyone who lives, works and plays here. One where City Hall is attentive, responsive and listens. One where the Mayor doesn’t hide but is out talking and having the tough conversations. One where Belleville reclaims its amazingness.
Together we will build back Belleville:
